Youths harass Melbourne train passengers

A man has had surgery for serious head injuries sustained when a group of youths
smashed a window on a late-night train in Melbourne.
The group of seven to 10 youths began harassing passengers about 11pm (AEST) on
Friday on a train headed to bayside Frankston, transit policeman Senior Detective
Craig Buttigieg said.
Passengers who reacted were allegedly threatened with a broken bottle.
When the train stopped at McKinnon station, some of the youths threw rocks at the
windows, smashing the glass and leaving a 29-year-old man with life-threatening head
injuries.
The Frankston South man underwent surgery at The Alfred hospital on Saturday morning.
The group of youths fled as police arrived, jumping the tracks and running through
the car park.
Police officers chased them and arrested a 17-year-old male at the scene.
He was interviewed by police and remanded in custody in relation to another matter.
"Police are appealing for witnesses to the assault, in particular the 40 to 50
passengers who got off the train at McKinnon station and were waiting on the
platform," Det Buttigieg said.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage.
In another train incident that ended at the same station on Friday night, a
passenger helped arrest a teenage girl accused of striking a woman in the head with
a bottle.
During an argument between two groups of young women, the teenager allegedly struck
the 19-year-old on the side of the head, causing a wound that required stitches.
The teenager was detained by another passenger on the train and arrested by police
at McKinnon station a short time later.
