PM: New Cabinet lineup completed

BANGKOK, June 5 (TNA) - Thailand’s Cabinet reshuffle, the fifth of its kind since the coalition government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva came to power on December 23, 2008, is now complete, the prime minister said Saturday.

Mr Abhisit told journalists the new Cabinet lineup is now ready and the qualifications of the prospective ministers are being screened by Surachai Puprasert, Secretary to the Cabinet.

However, Mr Abhisit declined to say when he would submit the list of the new Cabinet for royal endorsement.

Mr Abhisit, leader of the ruling Democrat Party, said earlier that the reshuffle would involve six or seven ministers and the changes could resolve both the country’s political ills and its wider national problems.

On displeasure expressed by some northern and northeastern MPs under the Democrat Party umbrella over a planned removal of Phaitoon Kaeothong from his labour ministerial portfolio, Mr Abhisit said he and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary-general of the party, had explained to Mr Phaitoon the reasons for removing him from the new lineup.

The executive board of the ruling Democrat Party and the meeting of party MPs resolved that three Democrats ministers would be removed -- Minister of Culture Teera Slukpetch, Minister of Labour Phaitoon Kaeothong and Minister of Science and Technology Kalaya Sophonpanich.

Meanwhile, four party MPs will be nominated as ministers -- Nipit Intarasombat, Ong-art Klampaiboon, Juti Krairerk, and Chalermchai Sri-on.

The reshuffle follows a Bhumjaithai Party ultimatum to the Democrats to remove some Puea Pandin Party factions from the six-party coalition government after they voted against the Bhumjaithai ministers in the no-confidence debate on Wednesday.

Bhumjaithai Party leader Chavarat Charnweerakul, as Interior Minister, and Sopon Zarum, as Transport Minister, received less votes than the prime minister and three other ministers.

Coalition partner Chart Thai Pattana Party said that there was no ministerial change under its party quota, while the Bhumjaithai Party had no plan to change its ministers. (TNA)
