400 Indian couples to marry at Phuket; Bt1 billion expected

PHUKET, June 4 (TNA) - More than Bt1 billion is expected to be circulation here when over 400 Indian couples to fly to this resort island dubbed the Andaman Pearl' for their marriage and honeymoon, according to Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)'s Phuket Office.

Wanprapa Suksomboon, TAT Phuket deputy director, said if the wedding event is held as planned, it will help boost the province's tourism and promote its tourist attractions.

Ms Wanprapa disclosed at a seminar in the provincial seat to promote Phuket tourism that India's TAT Mumbai -- formerly known as Bombay -- together with an Indian wedding company are cooperating with TAT Phuket to bring in and host a big event for 400 Indian couples to marry on the island.

She said TAT is now dealing with local hotels as a possible venue for the ceremony and for guestrooms.

As TAT has opened its office in Mumbai, the market of Indian tourists is considered new to Phuket, which in return is eye-catching to Indians. In addition, the province has been one of the famous destinations for foreigners from other countries to marry, especially Koreans, which makes it more attractive to Indians.

She added this group of travellers prefers to travel to Thailand in the 'green' or rainy season in the country, which benefits local tourism, especially when it is a low season in the province.

Phuket is one of 100 places for couples to pledge their love and one of the 20 places for them to propose to their loved ones, according to Ms Wanprapa.

She also believed the province has the possibility to become a main venue for weddings and honeymoons in the future.

Laem Promthep in the provincial seat and Surin Beach in Thalang district are among the places here getting a reputation for celebrating romance and marriage proposals. (TNA)
