90 PCT OF INDONESIA'S TIN NEEDS CAME FROM BABEL

Pangkalpinang, July 14 (ANTARA)- Some 90 percent of Indonesia's tin consumption came from Bangka Belitung province which produces 95,000 metric tons of tin per year.

"The national tin consumption currently stands at 250,000 metric tons per year, and Bangka Belitung (Babel) is the biggest contributor compared to other areas in the country," Head of the Babel Mining and Energy Agency Noor Nedi said here on Monday.

Meanwhile, 38 percent of the world's tin needs came from Babel province especially for Peru and China as the tin output of the two countries were not enough to meet their need for the commodity.

"Especially China, although it is a major tin mining country, but its tin production is not enough for its consumption, and has to import the commodity, among others from Babel," he said.

He said that Babel's tin exports reached Rp11.3 trillion per year, and its tin mine workers totaled 31,000.

"Babel has 532,324 ha of tin mines exploited by a number of tin mining companies in the region, including PT Timah Tbk,PT Koba Tin and some others," he said.

Babel's tin output, he added, had encouraged growth in other sectors like infrastructure, roads to remote places, and activities at the ports in the region.
