Kyrgyzstan lifts state of emergency in Jalal-Abad.
BISHKEK, June 2 (Itar-Tass) - Kyrgyzstan's interim government decided to lift the state of emergency in the regional center of Jalal-Abad and the adjacent Suzak district, the press service of the interim government told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
"The state of emergency was imposed here on May 19, as disturbances
broke out between the representatives of various political forces, as well
as Uzbek and Kyrgyz citizens. Three people died and another 62 were
injured during the unrest in Jalal-Abad and the Suzak district," the press
service said.
Curfew from 20:00 to 06:00 was imposed on the city, the interim
government brought in interior troops and army units; and military
equipment. Initially, it was planned to maintain the state of emergency in
Jalal-Abad until June 1.
To provide for law and order in the city, the authorities enlisted 940
police, interior troops and servicemen and 400 vigilantes.
"There is no need for such tough actions now, so a decision was made
to lift the state or emergency," the press service said.
"We had to make decisions and take responsibility for their
consequences, acting Interior Minister, Jalal-Abad commandant Baktybek
Alymbekov stated on Tuesday, "the situation was critical."
During the state of emergency period, police confiscated two dozen
units of firearms, 3,000 rounds of ammunition and a sonic grenade from the
