Opposition Puea Thai party starts grilling PM, ministers
BANGKOK, May 31 (TNA) - The Opposition Puea Thai Party began the
no-confidence debate against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and five
cabinet ministers on Monday amid tight security, with Thailand's recent deadly political turmoil expected to dominate the debate.
Mr Abhisit was named in the motion alongside Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Minister of Interior Chavarat Charnvirakul, Minister of Finance Korn Chatikavanij, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kasit Piromya and Minister of Transport Sopon Zarum.
Government and opposition whips agreed on Sunday that the debate would
last two days--Monday and Tuesday--and the no-confidence vote will take place Wednesday.
Deputy Government Whip Wirat Kalayasiri said the opposition MPs would have 18 hours to debate while the government side would have 13.5 hours and would include 7.5 hours for protest during the debate by both sides.
He said Monday's session is set for 9am-1am, with Tuesday's debate
starting at 8.30am and finishing before midnight in order to vote on
Wednesday before the end of the current extraordinary parliamentary
session which was opened to deliberate the Budget Bill for fiscal 2011.
Mr Abhisit was scheduled to speak from 9-10.30pm and Chalerm Yoobamrung, Puea Thai MP chairman is expected to lead the opposition's debate team and have the closing debate.
Mr Chalerm earlier said that he would focus on the donation scandal
against the Democrat Party along with some controversial government
projects.
Other opposition party MPs will focus on other issues, he said, which
would include to the recent political turmoil.
The veteran politician said that he didn't believe the censure debate
would force the government to collapse, but that the debate is only aimed to provide the truth to the public.
Mr Abhisit said earlier all the targeted Cabinet members were well
prepared to explain their responsibilities and issues questioned by the opposition party. However, he called on the Opposition to conduct its censure debate with facts and truth to avoid further rifts that could derail reconciliation.
He also expected that the no-confidence debate on Monday and Tuesday would be a stage for all sides to clarify facts toward the recent political crisis using their better judgment and reasoning.
Meanwhile, a Suan Dusit Poll conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University found that 52 per cent of respondents agreed with the opposition's move to censure the government because the government would have opportunity to show its transparency in working.
Nationwide, 1,516 people were surveyed from May 27 to 29 on what they felt about the censure debate. Mr Suthep was the respondents' favourite target for censure with 42.13 per cent while Mr Chalerm was their favourite with 74.56 per cent to grill the government.
The details of the security forces operations against the protesters was a hot topic that respondents wanted to know more about during the debate.(TNA)
