Soltanieh: US better opt for co-op with Iran
United Nations, New York, May 29, IRNA – Iran’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali-Asghar Soltanieyeh said that the US should change its policy from confrontation to cooperation with Iran.
He made the remark while talking to reporters at the end of the 2010 NPT Review Conference in New York.
Asked to comment on the reasons why the US submitted a draft statement on further sanctions against Iran to the Security Council simultaneous with the closing of the meeting on the NPT, he noted that the Iranian government initiated a fresh measure during the meeting period but the US embarked on another unfair move instead of welcoming Iran’s goodwill gesture.
He said he would like to advise the US to rethink its policies and change over its attitude from confrontation to cooperation with Iran.
Describing the final statement of the meeting as weak, he said Iran wanted the statement to firmly ask Israel to join NPT while it sufficed with pointing to only parts of the 2000 document.
He said the international community expected more solid steps to be taken towards this end.
However, Soltanieyeh added, despite its weak spirit, the statement was still another step towards disarmament.
Regretting that countries like the US and France which possess atomic arsenal keep creating obstacles on recognizing the expectations of the international community, the Iranian diplomat said that Iran insisted on fixing a date for elimination of nuclear weapons.
He noted that Iran proposed the year 2025 for this purpose, adding that the idea was also backed by the Non-Aligned Movement which meant 116 countries membering the body shared the same view with Iran.
He also said that one important issue regarding the statement was the issue of a Middle East void of atomic weapons which Iran has been focusing on its metallization in the past three decades.
The diplomat further expressed his view that Middle East was caught in a vicious cycle because the main problem the region was facing was the Zionist regime’s refusal to sign and abide by international documents such as the Non-Proliferation Treaty./end
