MOSCOW, May 28 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister
Alexander Grushko does not rule out that the situation around the sinking
of the South Korean Cheonan warship heating tensions between the two
Koreas may be discussed at the upcoming Russia-EU summit in Rostov-on-Don.
"Probably this issue will not be left without attention, as summits
present a good opportunity for comparing positions and coordinating
approaches on most important international issues," the top diplomat said.
"As for the situation on the Korean peninsula, we proceed from the
fact that now the international community must make every effort to
prevent destabilization of the situation," he stressed. "It is necessary
to use all available instruments that will not let the situation
aggravate," Grushko added.
The Cheonan corvette having the displacement of 1,200 tons exploded
and sunk near the North Korean zone of maritime control in the Yellow Sea
on March 26. Forty-six seamen on board died.
The commission created by the South Korean government, helped by
foreign experts, came to the conclusion that the corvette had been
destroyed by a torpedo fired from a North Korean mini submarine.
North Korea has said it will rip up military agreements with the South
guaranteeing safety of cross-border exchanges, and has reportedly put its
military on combat readiness, after Seoul said it would ban trade with the
North and stop its commercial ships using South Korean waters following
the sinking of the warship.
