Abhisit government moves on three fronts to materialise national reconciliation plan

BANGKOK, May 28 (TNA) -- Thailand’s embattled Abhisit Vejjajiva government on Friday embarked on three fronts to actualise its five-point national reconciliation plan, designed to end the country’s political turbulence, succeed, said Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Satit Wonghnongtaey.

Speaking to journalists after meeting for over two hours with representatives of business, civil society, and private organisations and individuals, Mr Satit said the prime minister would initially invite the civil society sector to participate and advise on political reform, and request pollsters to survey the people on what direction they want to see for the country in future.

People will be recruited to work with the plan, and will be appointed in early June, said Mr Satit. They are expected to work for four to five months.

At the same time the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology will conduct a census in the country. Questionnaires will be given to some 20 million people on the national reconciliation plan proposed by Mr Abhisit on May 5, Mr Satit said.

He denied that the programmes to enable the national reconciliation plan progress were to help the government in the next general elections and said they had nothing to do with any timeframe in dissolving the House of Representatives by the prime minister.

It is still unknown whether Mr Abhisit will dissolve the House late this year as he pledged when he first proposed the plan. (TNA)
