Moldova plans to outlaw Communists
CHISINAU, May 28 (Itar-Tass) -- Pro-western acting Moldova's President
Mihai Gimpu plans to outlaw the Communist Party, which will bar the
leading opposition party from early parliamentary elections.
Gimpu told reporters on Thursday he "prepares to propose to parliament
to outlaw the Communist party" which ran the country for the past eight
years.
"Parliament will make a decision on the basis of the report of the
commission that assessed the totalitarian Communist regime. Communism has
to be denounced as today we live in misery because of communism," he said.
But Gimpu remarked he personally wants no ban on the Communist party
however "Communist party members themselves want to be outlawed."
Gimpu established the commission to assess the totalitarian regime
early this year which is expected to submit its report by June 1.
Moldovan public was split on the decision and media said Gimpu is
trying to bar the Communists from early parliamentary elections which they
plan to win.
The Communists who control nearly a half of the seats in parliament
decided to boycott its sessions until the date of the early election is
announced.
