Police intensify hunt for Red Shirt leader Arisman, others

BANGKOK, May 27 (TNA) - Forty-nine members of the anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) with outstanding arrest warrants for violating the emergency law, including leading members such as 'hard core' singer-activist Arisman Pongruangrong, are still on the run, according to a senior police officer.

Pol Col Supisan Pakdeenaruanaj, acting commander of the Crime Suppression Division said it is not only Mr Arisman who is still at large, but other leading UDD members now on the run include Charan Ditthapichai, Adisorn Piangket, Chinnawat Haboonpad and Darunee Kritboonyalai who were on the UDD stage at Ratchaprasong intersection during the protest but disappeared on before the Red Shirt leaders
announced the end to the rally at Ratchaprasong on May 19.

He said police believed that most of them would hide in their hometowns, particularly Mr Arisman who is believed to be in Ratchaburi where a police team is now searching for him.

Col Supisan said so far 12 suspects have surrendered to police, 15 have been detained and one had died -- Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol.

The Criminal Court on Wednesday issued another arrest warrant for Arisman for failing to show up to testify after being charged with defaming Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

The singer-turned-political activist is accused of defaming the prime minister in his speeches to the Red Shirt protesters rallying in Bangkok on October 11 and 17 last year at Victory Monument when he said that Mr Abhisit caused the king's illness and rose to his premiership by "robbing the people's power."
