World Environment Day Celebration at Sepon Operation
(KPL) To raise awareness of the global issue of climate change, Oxiana - Lane Xang Minerals Limited (LXML) - owner of the Sepon gold and copper operations in Savannakhet Province in Laos commemorated World Environment Day (WED).
To raise awareness amongst staff and amongst residents of the Vilabouty district, a screening of the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was held on the5th of June and a Walking against Climate Change was held on the 8th of June.
These two activities attracted a number of staff across all departments within the Sepon site, employees from the company's contractors together with onsite government representatives from Water Resource and EnvironmentAdministration (WREA) of Savannakhet Province.
The walk was led by the Sepon Operations General Manager, Mr. Phil Dunstan together with more than 350 LXML staff and Vilabouly government officials participating in the walk which was over a distance of 6.5 kilometers fromthe Sepon site to Vilabouly district.
The screening of the movie aimed to raise awareness of global warming and climate change issues including increase in the world's temperatures due to human activities. The movie was made by Former US Vice President, Mr. AlGore and earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
After the movie screening, there was a 20 - minute quiz and discussion aboutways in which Oxiana - LXML could reduce its energy use intensity.
Oxiana - LXML has encouraged its staff to be involved in environmental protection on a daily basis through initiatives such as recycling waste where plastic bottles, plastic bags, paper and, food waste are segregatedand recycled or reused.
In addition, the Sepon Environment Department has been very pro-active inraising public awareness of waste management via the Sepon Sunday Clean Up.
The Sepon Sunday Clean Up primarily aims to raise awareness of local people to become more responsible with littering and to also provide a practical demonstration of environmental protection by urging local residents to help each other to keep the district tidy. The department also has set up six environmental campaign billboards in Vilabouly district as well as initiatedenergy efficiency programs.
WED was proclaimed in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil. The primary objective of the WED is to raise global awareness and actions on momentous environmental issues occurred worldwide. The WED this year celebration mainly aimed to empower individuals to alter their conventional behaviors and habits in lowering their carbon footprints as corresponded with its slogan: "Kick the CO2 Habit- Towards a Low Carbon Economy." The Walk Against Climate Change heading to Vilabouly District from the Seponsite.
