Industrial Sentiment Index drops 3rd consecutive month

BANGKOK, May 27 (TNA) – The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) dropped for the third consecutive month to 99.3 in April from 101.6 in March, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

FTI chairman Payungsak Chartsuthipol said the index calculated based on a survey of 1,135 industrial operators in 39 industries decreased in terms of purchase orders, total sales, production, operating costs, and performance results as a result of the mass rally by anti-government protesters in Ratchaprasong Intersection, the main business and tourism center in the city, and nearby areas.

The index fall also stemmed from the production decrease since there are long holidays in April.

Furthermore, higher fuel prices, labour shortages in many industries, and increased prices of various kinds of raw materials had shaken confidence in entrepreneurship costs.

He said the expected TISI in the next three month edged up slightly to 107.4 in April from 107.2 in March since entrepreneurs believed the purchase orders, total sale, production, and operating performances would improve.

Mr Payungsak said the production and product delivery remained normal despite the recent political riot.

He said the FTI will make a written clarification about the political unrest in a bid to restore confidence among private-sector trading partners and overseas ventures.

In addition, it would urge the government to step up efforts to help people affected by the political violence and rehabilitate the damaged social and economic sectors.

The FTI chief said he was confident the country’s economy would enjoy a higher-than-expected growth if the political situation returned to normal. (TNA)
