ASTANA, May 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Turkey and Kazakhstan play an important
role in the establishment of a new Silk Road to connect the West and the
East, Turkey's President Abdullah Gul told Kazakhstan's parliamentarians
on Wednesday.
"Turkey and Kazakhstan will be responsible for the development of new
transport, communication and energy corridors, or, in other words, for the
development of a new Silk Road to connect Europe, Asia, the West and the
East," he said.
The construction of the railroad Baku-Tbilisi-Kars is an important
step towards the revival of the Silk Road, he said.
"As, together with Kazakhstan, we build this road to connect China and
the Far East with European markets, we shall make an important step on the
way to revive the historic Silk Road," Gul said.
He spoke about cooperation in energy, saying that "the first supplies
of Kazakhstan's oil via the Baku-Tbilisi-Jeihan pipeline in November 2008
set an important transition period" in this sphere. The transportation of
Kazakhstan's oil via the Samsun-Jeihan pipeline will be a "new stage" of
this cooperation, Gul said.
