Soltanieh: Iran’s letter to IAEA, a chance to end stand-off
Tehran, May 26, IRNA -- Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna, Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said on Tuesday that Tehran’s letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency provided an opportunity to end the stand-off with the Vienna Group.
Iran agreed to fuel swap with the Vienna Group -- the U.S., France and Russia -- in a letter handed over to IAEA Director-General Yukiya Amano on Monday and advised the states making up the Vienna Group to seize opportunity to come back to the negotiating table as soon as possible.
He said that the IAEA chief has promised to make Iran’s letter available to the Vienna Group and to reflect their views to Tehran respectively.
Soltanieh said that the Charter of the IAEA has envisaged commitment of the UN nuclear agency to provide the member states with fuel they need to operate the nuclear sites.
Soltanieh said that the Islamic Republic of Iran demanded the IAEA to supply fuel for Tehran medical research reactor last year, but, the Agency has yet to take practical step in this respect. "The delay runs counter to the IAEA commitments."
Those countries which voiced readiness to provide Tehran with fuel should give explanation about their negligence, he said.
Soltanieh said that in the letter, Iran has asked the IAEA chief not to limit himself to members of Vienna Group for supply of fuel to Tehran medical research reactor and forward Iran’s demand to other suppliers of fuel too./end
