Kazakh pres favours expansion of cooperation with Turkey.
ASTANA, May 25 (Itar-Tass) - Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev
suggested on Tuesday drafting a joint economic programme, taking into
account the creation of additional possibilities for cooperation with the
Customs Union at talks with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul.
At the talks, Nazarbayev put forth an initiative to draft, under the
auspices of the two presidents, "a joint economic programme which would
include specific projects of participation of Turkish investors in
implementing plans of Kazakhstan's new industrialisation," reports the
press service of the Kazakh head of state.
Nazarbayev noted "the Customs Union of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus
opens additional possibilities for developing economic activities with
Turkish businessmen". A chance appeared for Turkish companies "to start
production of goods in Kazakhstan for subsequent export to Russian and
Belarussian markets," he summed up.
The Kazakh president voiced support "for restoring and stepping up"
the volume of trade between the two states, which slumped under the
influence of the world financial and economic crisis. "A very high mutual
trade developed between the two countries; it reached 2.9 billion US
dollars in 2008.
"Under the influence of the world crisis, trade dropped to 1.4 billion
dollars in 2009. Therefore, it is necessary to take efforts to restore and
boost mutual trade between our nations," said Nazarbayev.
The Kazakh and Turkish leaders agreed at the talks to call the first
meeting of the Council of Cooperation of Turkic-Language States; a
proposal on its establishment was pur forth by Nazarbayev at the ninth
Summit of the heads of Turkic-language states in Azerbaijan in November
2009. In the opinion of the Kazakh president, the Turkic Council should
possess all necessary signs of a political regional association, a legal
status and definite organisational structures.
Abdullah Gul is on an official visit to Kazakhstan. On Monday, he
along with Nazarbayev met students and the faculty of the International
Kazakh-Turkish University named after Yasavi in the city of Turkestan.
The Turkish president accepted with gratitude a diploma, conferring on him
the title of the university's honorary professor.
In turn, he presented Nazarbayev a sceptre - an ancient symbol of
power. "You are a Great Aksakal (Eds: elder). I say this on behalf of all
Turkic countries as a sign of your recognition the Leader of Turkic
peoples. Let this Sceptre of power symbolize the first person of your
sovereign state, as it was the case with ancient Turkic peoples," Gul said.
The Yasavi University was established by the efforts of Kazakhstan and
Turkey and is now the first international higher educational
establishment, having an international status among Turkic-language
peoples.
