JAPAN OFFERS RI $300 MILLION LOANS TO OVERCOME CLIMATE CHANGE
Tokyo, July 13 (ANTARA) - Japan has offered Indonesia US$300 million in loans to finance a wide range of activities to overcome climate change.
The loans were part of the Japanese partnership program aimed at overcoming climate change, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a press statement on Sunday.
Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda offered the loans dubbed "Climate Change Program Loans" to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at a bilateral meeting held on the final day of the G-8 (Group of Eight Industrialized Countries) Summit in Hokkaido, Japan, on July 9, the statement said.
On the last day of the G-8 Summit, President Yudhoyono held seven talks with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, World Bank President Robert Zoellick and Premier Fukuda, among others.
At his 10-minute meeting with the Indonesian leader, Fukuda lauded the Indonesian government for its success in holding the climate change summit in Bali last December and retiterated his government's decision to provide Indonesia with US$300 million in loans to overcome climate change.
The loans will be Japan's first official development assistance (ODA) related to a program aid package called "Cool Earth Partnership".
Japan is currently conducting global climate change campaigns by offering a concept on Cool Earth 50 designed to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent up to 2050.
On the occasion, President Yudhoyono stressed that Indonesia would use the loans as effectively as possible.
He also expressed hope that the Japanese-Indonesian relations that had existed since 50 years ago would further enhance friendship and economic relations between the two countries in the future.
Fukuda shared Yudhoyono's view considering that 2008 had been declared a year of friendship between the two nations.
