INDRAMAYU POWER PLANT TO START OPERATING IN MAY 2009

Indramayu, W Java, July 13 (ANTARA) - The first unit of the Indramayu steam power plant (PLTU) which is now under construction is expected to start operating in May 2009 or three months ahead of schedule, its project manager said.

The power plant consisted of three units which had a capacity of 330 megawatts each, Mudayat said in his presentation before Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Sunday.

"The first of the three units will start operating or will be connected to the Java-Bali grid in May 2009 while the second and third units in three months and six months later," Mudayat said.

The earlier-than-scheduled operation of the power plant located at Sumuradem village in Indramayu district, West Java, would not affect its construction cost estimated at Rp8.7 trillion, he said.

"The construction cost will not increase," he said.

The PLTU Indramayu is among the 10 such power plants in Java whose construction will be completed earlier than scheduled under Presidential Decree No.7/2006 on the accelerated construction of power plants with a combined capacity of 10,000 MW.

"Once the PLTUs are operational, state electricity company PT PLN can save US$1.68 million from its fuel consumption," he said.

By July 2008, the construction of the PLTU Indramayu which is 15 percent funded by a consortium of domestic banks and 85 percent by a consortium of overseas banks had been 47.35 percent completed, he said.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla was during the visit accompanied by State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

Also on Sunday, Kalla inspected the construction of the second unit of the steam power plant in Labuan, Banten province.

The vice president's visit was aimed at ensuring that the construction of the power plants in Java island and in other parts of the country with a combined capacity of 10,000 MW could be completed on schedule to meet rising demand for electricity.
