VP OPTIMISTIC NO MORE BLACKOUTS IN JAVA IN 2009

Indramayu, W Java, July 13 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla expressed optimism that there will be no more scheduled rotating blackouts in Java Island in 2009 if the construction of three coal-fired power plants (PLTUs) can be completed as scheduled.

The three power plants, namely PLTU Labuan, unit 2, PLTU Indramayu, unit 1, and PLTU Rembang are part the 10,000 megawatts (MW) project.

"After observing the construction of two power plants today, and hopefully completed ahead of schedule, I am optimistic that in 2009 there will be no more rotating power blackouts in Java," Kalla said, adding that PLTU Rembang would be completed as scheduled.

The vice president said the three PLTUs in Java, namely PLTU Labuan, unit 2 (2x300 MW), PLTU Indramayu, unit 1 (2x330 MW), and PLTU Rembang (315 MW), are still under construction, and the contractors said they will try to complete than as early as possible.

"If the project can be completed earlier than scheduled, I am sure that in 2009 there will be no more power blackouts in Java, and if all the power plants with a total capacity of 10 thousand megawattts (MW) could be completed in 2011, the entire country would no have blackouts," Jusuf Kalla asserted.

The vice president believed that the speeding up of the construction of the 10,000 MW project will not lower the quality of the project.

"No problem. We have invited building consultants and supervisors from New Zealand and Germany for quality control," he said.

According to him, in a bid to guarantee the supply sustainable power supply in the future, the government has decided to build the second phase of power plants with a total capacity of 40,000 MW until 2015.

The blackouts are caused by a drop in capacity of the power plants in Paiton, Suralaya and Cilacap, which normally provide 7.700 MW to the Java-Bali power grid.
