Turkish Airlines to open Sochi-Istanbul regular flights Tue.



SOCHI, May 25 (Itar-Tass) - A ceremony marking the opening of regular
flights between this resort city and Istanbul by the Turkish Airlines
Company (TAC) airliners is to be held here on Tuesday.
Sochi will become a seventh Russian city where the Turkish air carrier
will operate, an official at the TAC mission here has told Itar-Tass. TAC
airliners already fly to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Rostov, St
Petersburg, and Ufa.
The TAC mission official emphasized that the opening of direct flights
to Istanbul would make it possible to link Sochi with over 120
international destinations around the world. The sides are planning to
discuss possibilities for increasing the transportation of passengers
between the two countries.
TAC airliners will be leaving Sochi airport three times a week on
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. TAC officials assure that at the peak of
the vacationing season a flight from Sochi to Istanbul and back will cost
a passenger 175 euros, taxes and dues not included.

.Medvedev to meet Ecumenical Patriarch Tuesday.

MOSCOW, May 25 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will
meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople on Tuesday,
the Kremlin press service announced.
Bartholomew I arrived in Russia on May 22 for a ten-day official visit
at the invitation of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
Bartholomew I is planning to tour the shrines of Moscow, visit St
Petersburg and the Valaam Island.

.Russia-EU innovations forum to open in Finland Tue.

HELSINKI, May 25 (Itar-Tass) - The modernization of industry, the
commercialization of Russian innovations, and energy efficiency will be
the main subjects of discussion at the first Russia-European Union (EU)
innovations forum opening in Lappeenranta on Tuesday.
An official at the forum's organizing committee has told Itar-Tass,
"More than 700 participants from the Russian and EU sides are expected to
attend the forum. These will be state-level politicians, the executives of
major companies, and experts in Russia-EU innovations".
"The forum is part of the EU-Russia international innovations
corridor, the purpose of which is to develop cooperation in the field of
innovations on the basis of the experience gained in interaction between
St Petersburg and south-eastern Finland," an official at the Lappeenranta
city council pointed out.
During the three-day forum, businessmen, scientists and politicians
are to discuss prospects for the development of innovations-based
partnership in industry, possibilities for raising the competitiveness of
Russia and the EU, the subtantialization of the potential of Russian
innovations, etc.
An exhibition of innovative products, and the final of an annual
contest of innovations are timed to coincide with the holding of the forum.

.Six-point earth jolt shakes Brazil.

VLADIVOSTOK, May 25 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake measuring 6.5 points
has occurred in Brazil. According to the US Geological Service, the
powerful temblor was recorded at 16:28 GMT on Monday at a depth of 565 km.
The epicenter of the jolt was 125 km southeast of the city of Cruzeiro
do Sul, 330 km east of the Peruvian city of Pucallpa, and 2,700 km
northwest of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil.
There have been no data on the aftermath of the earthquake. According
to Russian seismologists, earth jolts that occur at depths of more than
100 km are not usually felt on the surface.

.Putin to visit Izhevsk to discuss arms supplies to army Tue.

MOSCOW, May 25 (Itar-Tass) -- On Tuesday, Prime Minister Vladimir
Putin is to visit the Izhevsk Machine-Building Factory -- the oldest
Russian enterprise making small arms -- and discuss the provision of the
army and law enforcement agencies with modern firearms, a government press
service official announced.
Putin will chair a meeting that will focus on the state of Russian
enterprises that design and make firearms, including their modernization,
as well as the state defence order and serial supplies of modern arms to
the army.
The inter-agency purpose-oriented programme "Developing Combat
Equipment for Military Personnel in 2010-2020" is being coordinated by
federal agencies. A key question is the development of new firearms and
close-combat systems.
First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, Defence Minister Anatoly
Serdyukov, and Rostekhnologii Director-General Sergei Chemezov will also
take part in the meeting.
