Sanctions on Iran uncalled for: Pak journalist

Islamabad, May 25, IRNA – A Senior Pakistani journalist Mir Jamil-ur-Rehman on Monday strongly rebuffed new US move to impose fresh sanctions on Iran.

Talking to IRNA, he said that Iran’s recent nuclear swap has paved the way to resole a deadlock between Islamic Republic and the west.

He stated that Iran being the signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can use nuclear energy for peaceful means. “I think the swap deal is a positive development”, he added.

Under the swap deal Tehran would send some 1,200 kg of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for a total of 120 kg of higher enriched uranium.

The US and west have been suspecting on Iran’s nuclear program saying that Iran is trying to build an atomic bomb, which the Iran has strongly denied.

Iran says its nuclear program is solely meant for civilian applications of the technology and has called for the total eradication of all weapons of mass destruction.

The United Nations Security Council has already imposed three rounds of sanctions against Iran. In addition, several western nations have warned that the Islamic republic will face harsher sanctions if it fails to halt its uranium enrichment program.

Mir Jamil-ur-Rehman said that Iran’s nuclear fuel swap deal shows that Iran has nothing to hide and it is developing its nuclear program only for peaceful purposes.

“Now it would be better for west not to disturb Iran over its nuclear program as it has already given many concessions”, he suggested.

The journalist added that the policy of coercion has always proved counter productive.

Mir Jamil-ur-Rehman expressing his views said that after the nuclear swap deal sanctions on Iran are not called. “West has to change its discriminatory attitude towards Iran”, he added.

He opined that Iran is an important state of the region and cannot be isolated by such moves.

The journalist said that the adverse impact of the sanctions would be the human sufferings. “The sanctions are actually against the Iranian people but the US does not care about human beings”, he believed.

He was of the opinion that that it is probably not possible to get favorable results out of these exercises. Mir Jamil-ur-Rehman said that the US move will fail as it will not get support of other countries to sanction Iran./end
