UNSC endorses recommendations on strengthening Afghan mission
United Nations, Jul 12 (PTI) The U.N. Security Council has endorsed Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's recommendations to strengthen the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (U.N.A.M.A.) to better assist in rebuilding the strife-tornnation country.
In his recent report, Ban had advocated strengthening U.N.A.M.A. in a number of key areas, including increasedstaffing and possible structural changes.
"Addressing current priorities will require additional personnel in areas of elections, support for Afghanistan National Development Strategy, aid effectiveness, institution- building and delivery of humanitarian assistance," he hadnoted.
The 15-member body endorsed the recommendation, in a statement read out by Ambassador Le Luong Minh of Vietnam, which holds the Council's rotating presidency for July.
"In order for U.N.A.M.A. to fulfil its mandate, much greater substantive, administrative, and security resources will need to be expeditiously mobilized in the areas mentionedin the report of the Secretary-General," it said.
The Council welcomed in particular the intention to proceed with another expansion of U.N.A.M.A.'s field presence through the opening of six new provincial offices over thenext 12 months.
Welcoming the strengthened partnership between the Afghan Government and international community exhibited at last month's Paris Conference – where dozens of countries and organizations pledged resources to help rebuild Afghanistan –the Council endorsed key elements coming out of that meeting.
These include importance of holding free, fair and secure elections in 2009 and 2010, the need to ensure respect of human rights and provision of humanitarian assistance, and the need to improve aid effectiveness to ensure that benefits ofdevelopment are tangible for every Afghan.
