Syrian FM: Imposing sanctions will fail after Tehran trilateral communiqué

Damascus, May 24, IRNA – Syrian foreign minister Walid al-Muallem said here Sunday using UNSC and imposing sanctions instead of IAEA would fail after Tehran trilateral communiqué.

According to the IRNA correspondent in Damascus, al-Muallem made the comment at a joint press conference with his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle after his meeting with President Bashar al-Assad, adding that such moves are doomed to fail, as the majority of the world countries are disagreed with them.

Al-Muallem added, “I informed Westerwelle of Syria’s welcome for the Tehran trilateral communiqué, telling him that this is the best opportunity for solving Iran’s nuclear issue through a diplomatic solution and dialogue.”

He said that the German foreign minister had a constructive and fruitful talk, adding, “Bilateral relations and ways for their comprehensive expansion, the status quo of the region, and major international developments were discussed during the meeting and it was agreed that the two countries should try to strengthen the foundations of peace, security and stability in the region.”

Referring to the ongoing Israeli war games, he said, “These war games are nothing new, as they are the sixth of their kind in past five months. The Zionist regime is thus beating on war drums, posing the question whether Tel Aviv is ready for peace, or about to wage yet another war?”

He reiterated, “Our European friends say that efforts should be made to make the peace efforts bear fruit. You know that we are ready for embracing peace and for applying the UN Security Council resolutions on land for peace, but we need to keep remaining alert, since in the absence of real peace the occurrence of any event is possible.”

Focusing on Zionist regime’s claims on delivery of Scud missiles to Hezbollah by the Syrian forces, Al-Muallem said, “The Scud missiles are quite large. How could a sound mind accept that such missiles would be smuggled secretly, while the Israeli planes and satellites keep flying over the entire region and the German forces assist them in controlling the boarders?”

He added, “Even if we would intend to deliver such missile to Hezbollah they would not accept them from us, as they are not appropriate for guerrilla wars, but the main question is whether Israel itself has stopped acquiring more and more weapons and getting armed to the teeth? Why is doing so fully permitted for them then, but prohibited for us Arabs? So long as the occupation and the war statuses continue, Syria would never act as the gendarme of Israel.”

On Syria’s broad diplomatic activities and the messages delivered in such visits, al-Muallem reiterated, “We are friends and together we seek the best means for détente and for harbingering regional peace and stability. We try to ward off tension that the Zionist regime keeps creating, seeking strategies for creating an appropriate atmosphere to resume the peace process.”

On Damascus viewpoint regarding the EU messages for getting involved in the peace talks both directly and indirectly, he said, “We welcome ant EU initiative for peace through Turkish mediation and we hope our European friends, too, would welcome Turkey’s meddling.”

The Syrian foreign minister elaborating on the reason why not official communiqué was issued on visit of the head of the head of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Congress John Carrey to Syria, emphasizing, “No communiqué was issued on his visit, as he had asked us not to do so. He visits Syria very often and he does not seem to care much about making titles in the media.”

He added, “The US Embassy issued a short communiqué yesterday. It was a good mission in the framework of establishing a warm atmosphere for dialogue between Syria and the United States, establishment of bilateral good relations, and efforts aimed at resuming the Washington-Damascus dialogue, and I believe he accomplished his mission successfully.”/end
