UN envoy praises Iran’s role in restoring Afghan security

Tehran, May 24, IRNA - UN special envoy to Afghanistan Staffan de Mistura here on Sunday praised Iran’s significant role in restoring security and tranquility to Afghanistan.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Chairman of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi in Tehran on Sunday.

The Islamic Republic of Iran with its ancient civilization has played a constructive role in Afghanistan, he said.

The world public opinion is against continued presence of alien forces in Afghanistan, he said.

He underlined that Afghan problems must be resolved through diplomatic means and use of military forces is doomed to fail.

Chairman of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Iran has had close cooperation with the UN on Afghanistan.

The UN should play an active and pivotal role in restoring peace and tranquility to Afghanistan and in the campaign against drug trafficking in the war-torn country, he said.

He strongly criticized the ill-behaviors of alien forces in Afghanistan who brought insecurity and increase the volume of poppy seed cultivation in the country./end
