International community better understands Thai political situation
BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) -- The international community has now gained a better understanding of the political unrest prevailing in Thailand, a senior Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry official said Sunday.
Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary of the minister of foreign affairs, said Saturday's briefing by the Thai government to foreign envoys and journalists explaining the necessity of a crackdown on anti-government protesters by the Thai government on Wednesday had helped the international community and organisations to gain wider knowledge on the political situation in the kingdom.
The international community, including ASEAN, the EU and the US now even support the Thai government in establishing an independent committee to investigate on the unrest, Mr Chavanond said.
Most recently, Catherine Ashton, foreign affairs chief of the EU, wrote to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva supporting his five-point plan for national reconciliation while US Senator Jim Webb is also considering issuing a statement in support of the plan which could resolve political conflict in Thailand, Mr Chavanond said.
Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya briefed the Organisation of the Islamic Conference on the Thai political situation after which its officials expressed a better understanding on the Thai political situation, he added. (TNA)
