Prowler targets women at Defence bases
A prowler is reportedly targeting women living at two Canberra military colleges and
striking when their partners are away on service.
Security has been stepped up at both Canberra training bases as police search for
the offender.
The prowler has already raped one woman and is suspected of terrorising several
others, the Seven Network reported on Sunday.
The victims, who live in the married quarters of the Australian Defence Force
Academy and the Royal Military College, have reported a hooded prowler in their
yards.
Defence confirmed a civilian resident was recently assaulted within one of the
establishments, but declined to comment on the details because it was part of an
ongoing investigation.
It also confirmed there had been a number of reports of prowlers within both married
quarter precincts in the past few weeks.
Residents have been warned of the incidents via a letterbox leaflet.
"Defence takes these incidents very seriously and has implemented additional
security measures, including ... increased AFP vehicle and foot patrols in the
area," it said in a statement.
"Defence will continue to monitor the situation, assess the security measures in
place, and keep all residents informed of developments."
ACT Police confirmed it is investigating a sexual assault which occurred at the
Royal Military College in August 2009, but said the incident did not appear to be
linked to the recent reports of suspicious activity.
