PM: Curfew may be relaxed in next two days

BANGKOK, May 23 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday that the curfew may relax in the next few days from 11pm or midnight to 4am or 5am, but the exact time will be announced Sunday afternoon.

Mr Abhisit made his first regular Sunday television address after curfew was imposed in Bangkok and 23 Red-active provinces since May 19 when angry protesters set afire 39 buildings in the capital and government offices in some northern and northeastern provinces.

They were outraged after the military operations to retake the anti-government protest site in Ratchaprasong forced protest leaders to end the six-week demonstration and to surrender to the police.

The Centre of the Resolution for the Emergency Situation (CRES) imposed a curfew on May 19 from 8pm to 6pm and extended the curfew for three more nights but reduced curfew hours to begin at 9pm, to allow the public more time to conduct their businesses.

“Everything is calm and returning to normalcy," the premier said on Sunday. City workers are cleaning up the rally area and traffic and everything will return to normalcy on Monday. Government agencies and schools will reopen. (TNA)
