Pakistani daily slams move to slap sanctions on Iran

Islamabad, May 22, IRNA -- A largely-circulated Pakistani daily, criticizing the latest American move to slap more sanctions on Iran, Friday called for negotiations to solve nuclear issue of Islamic Republic peacefully.
The English-language daily Dawn urged the Obama administration to abandon the stance of its predecessors about Iran and to adopt the path of negotiations.
“This is the only viable approach,” the English language daily said in its editorial “New sanctions on Iran?” It said that the US move will fail as it will not get support of other countries to sanction Iran.
“This is more a show of force that will fail to put pressure on Iran because many countries may not go along with the US,” the editorial said.
It observed that the days have gone when the US as the world’s sole superpower could resort to some arm-twisting to have its way with the smaller countries.
“In a world that is gradually moving towards multiple power centres, Washington will have to include the concerns of other powers in its foreign policy. This is plain in the way the Iranian crisis has evolved,” the editorial said.
Three rounds of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council since 2006 at the behest of the US have failed to bring Tehran to heel. Now another draft resolution has been worked out which will impose some more sanctions on Iran in a bid to get it to moderate its nuclear programme, it recalled.
The editorial also referred to the differences expressed by Moscow and Beijing, adding that the Russians have made it clear that they will not allow any move that goes beyond the collective position. “The timing of Iran’s uranium exchange deals with Brazil and Turkey should also send a message to Washington that there are countries that will break ranks,” the daily pointed out./end
