PM orders authorities to clarify alleged comfortable detention of Red Shirt leaders
BANGKOK, May 22 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has ordered concerned government agencies to clarify to the public regarding the level of comfort of eight core leaders of anti-government protesters who surrendered to police earlier this week and are now living in a guesthouse of the Naresuan Police Border Patrol Camp, said Thepthai Senpong, a spokesman of the ruling Democrat Party.
The order follows publication in Saturday's newspapers of photos of the eight anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders now detained at the camp in Phetchaburi’s Cha-am resort district, where they were reportedly enjoying a holiday-like lifestyle with their families while in detention.
The photos sparked an outcry from the public as detained UDD leaders were living in air-conditioned rooms with sufficient facilities offered to them.
Concerned government units must explain to the public why the defendants are treated so well, and they must strictly follow legal procedures on treating the defendants without using double standards, Mr Thepthai quoted the prime minister as saying.
Mr Thepthai said the pictures could, however, inform international human rights agencies that the government did not mistreat the defendants as some international NGOs have expressed concern for their well-being.
As workers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) continued cleaning streets formerly occupied by UDD protesters and collecting garbage in the capital, BMA Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said City Hall is determined to repair damages to continue Bangkok's status as a world class city.
Mr Sukhumbhand said BMA will ask the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) to allow members of the public and BMA workers to jointly launch a “Big Cleaning Day” at Ratchaprasong intersection Sunday.
He said BMA also plans to organise a major merit-making event for the city, with details to follow later.
The Erawan Emergency Medical Centre, meanwhile, announced that 53 people were killed and 415 wounded during clashes between UDD protesters and combined police and army personnel from May 14 until present.
Of the wounded, 173 remained in hospital, with 10 persons in intensive care units. (TNA)
