Anti-govt leader says general appearing at rally site not wrong

BANGKOK, July 13 (TNA) - Retired Thai Army Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang, one of the core leaders of the democracy-activist People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), said a senior army general appearing at the rally site earlier this week and speaking against the Thai government on the subject of a temple on the Thai-Cambodian border was done with the purpose of protecting Thai sovereignty.

Gen. Chamlong's remarks were made after Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, also defense minister, had ordered a disciplinary inquiry into the actions of Gen. Pathompong Kasornsuk, chief advisor to the Supreme Command, speaking to the PAD, a group dedicated to removing the current government, on Tuesday and Friday.

He said what Gen. Pathompong had done, in military uniform when headdressed the crowds, was right as he could not sit idly because he had earlier sent letters to military chiefs to react on the Preah Vihear temple but all of them kept silence.

On June 17 the Thai government approved a communiqué signed by Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok Anregarding the temple.

United Nations committee on Monday approved listing the temple as a World Heritage site, as sought by the Cambodian government.

According to Gen. Chamlong, Supreme Commander Gen. Boonsang Niempraditsaid that, correctly, the maximum disciplinary action against Gen.

Pathompong was only a warning, hat there was no wrong in speaking at the rally in a military uniform.

Meanwhile, a PAD spokesman said his group would likely succeed ingathering 20,000 signatures within the next few days and submit them to Senate Speaker to impeach political office holders who had violated the Constitution's Article 190.

The spokesman said members and supporters of the PAD will visit the office of the National Counter Corruption Commission on Monday and submit a letter urging it to take legal action against the entire cabinet and related officials due to their role in allegedly causing Thailand to lose sovereignty in the listing of the Preah Vihear temple.
