TURKEY'S GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS RANK DOWN 1 NOTCH, SURVEY

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 20.05.2010 - Turkey's global competitiveness fell one notch to 48th, however, its economic performance was up four notches to 50th, according to a survey conducted by Switzerland-based business school International Institute for Management Development, or IMD.
Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) said in a statement that IMD's World Competitiveness Yearbook, released Wednesday, analyzes 58 industrialized and emerging economies and provides 327 criteria.
The survey is reputed as being the worldwide reference point on the competitiveness of nations, ranking and analyzing how an economy manages the totality of its resources and competencies to increase the prosperity of its population, TUSIAD said.
Singapore (1) and Hong Kong (2) have topped the United States (3) in IMD's World Competitiveness Yearbook rankings.
"Turkey, ranking in the 48th place, have outpaced EU countries Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Slovakia as well as Croatia, Russia, Ukraine, Jordan, Argentina and Venezuela," TUSIAD said.
Turkey's economic performance has been negatively affected by low total foreign investments although it had risen significantly in recent years when compared to past, it said, adding that, however, tourism income and portfolio investments have had positive impacts on Turkey's advance in "economic performance" ranking.
TUSIAD also urged necessary labor market reforms to combat unemployment and called on government to prevent possible rise of interest rates and stop appreciation of Turkish currency while trying to keep inflation at low levels.
"EU negotiation process must be accelerated, budgetary discipline must be maintained and a strong fiscal rule must be implemented in 2010," it said.
