Turkey-Brazil must be present in Iran nuclear talks with 5+1: MP
Tehran, May 19, IRNA – Spokesman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali said Wednesday that Turkey and Brazil should be present in the Group 5+1 nuclear talks with Iran in the future.
He made the remarks commenting on a demand made by a senior Brazilian official on Tuesday on joining of Turkey and Brazil to any nuclear talks between Iran and the G5+1 in the future.
The Group of 5+1 is composed of five permanent members of the Security Council— China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States plus Germany.
They have held, so far, several rounds of talks with Iran on its peaceful nuclear program.
As a joint declaration was signed on Monday by Turkey and Brazil’s mediation on fuel swap for Tehran's Research Reactor, the two countries have become major and influential players in Iran’s nuclear issue, Jalali said.
Iran, Turkey and Brazil singed a joint declaration on May 17 dubbed as the Tehran Declaration upon which Iran agreed to exchange 1,200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.
The exchange would take place in Turkey under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran.
According to the agreement, Iran must notify the IAEA about the deal “in writing” by May 24.
As the agreement was reached by the mediation of Ankara and Brasilia, the two capitals were willing to follow up the process of Iran’s nuclear fuel swap in the future, Jalali stated.
He advised the West to “make an ideal use of the present opportunity and try to prepare the grounds for signing a complementary agreement between Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Vienna Group (France, Russia and US).”
Criticizing the approval of any new sanctions against Iran, the official said, “Approving any draft resolution against Iran or releasing any further anti-Iran sanctions would be considered equal to violation of the Tehran Declaration.”
Jalali stressed that any further possible anti-Iran resolution “will indicate that those who back such moves have no serious intention, despite their claims, to use the opportunity resulted from Iran’s good will.”
Jalali stressed releasing any further resolution against Iran would make it clear that the US and its allies were not honest in what they said about Iran.
“If the US and its allies move towards issuing another resolution against Iran, this would once again prove that Western states are not trustworthy. This would also prove Iran’s honesty to the world public opinion.” stressed the official./end
