Thailand to step up anti-human trafficking campaigns

BANGKOK, July 12 (TNA) - With more than Bt200 billion involved globally in the illegal trafficking of women, childen and men, the Thai government is acting to step up campaigns to educate the public, warning of the dangers of the business, a senior official said.

Thailand's Permanent Secretary for Social Development and Human Security, Wanlop Phloytabtim, said that US government information has disclosed that over Bt200 billion -- US$6 billion -- is said to be involved the trafficking business worldwide, and that those involved in the trade had amassed fortunes.

Mr. Wanlop said it is necessary for the Thai government to eradicate the problem as far as it takes place within this country.

It is vital for the Thai government to implement both legal and social measures to deal with the issue, Mr. Wanlop said, especially after a law was issued earlier this year to punish both traders and government officials involved in the illegal business.

More severe jail terms and seizure of assets are imposed in the new law, he said.

Beginning last month, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security joined with MCOT Public Co. Ltd. (parent company of Thai News Agency) to conduct seminars in five provinces countrywide through August to educate the public, officials and concerned parties to prevent the illegal trade from contributing to the deterioration of society.
