Jatuporn , key Red Shirt leaders surrender to police
BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) - Key Red Shirt leaders Jatuporn Prompan and Natthawut Saikua surrendered to police Wednesday afternoon amid tight security after military operation to retake Bangkok's prime commercial area of Ratchaprasong where Red Shirt protesters have encamped for more than one month.
Other leaders who turned themselves in to police are Nisit Sithuprai and Wiphuthalang Pattanaphuthai.
The Red Shirt leaders earlier announced the end of protest at Ratchaprasong as troops approached the group's main rally site.
Before surrendering to police, Mr jatuporn told his supporters that he and other leaders would surrender to police to prevent further loss of Red Shirt lives, but this does not mean the fight is over.
Three top leaders --Arisman Pongruangrong, Weng Tojirakarn and Suporn Attawong--fled the protest site and it is not known where they are and how their followers will do.
Five persons including an Italian journalist were reportedly killed while at least 50 persons were wounded during the clashes between troops and Red Shirt protesters which began before dawn.
The Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation spokesperson Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said a news conference that the situation in Bangkok was now under military control and that a military operation has been halted as the Red Shirt leaders turned themselves in to police.
He said thousands of protesters are urged to go home on transport provided by authorities. (TNA)
