ASTANA, May 19 (Itar-Tass) - The first nuclear power plant in
Kazakhstan will be built by 2020 in the south-west of the republic, in the
city of Aktau, Kazakhstan's chairman of nuclear energy committee at the
Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, Timur Zhantikin, said on
Wednesday.
"We have a positive decision that the construction will be organised
in Aktau, though an exact plot has not been picked yet," he said. "We are
at the stage of feasibility studies right now and we plan to finalise the
construction of the nuclear power plant by 2020."
Kazakhstan will have a tender to choose a construction company, he
said. The feasibility studies are made by a Kazakhstan-Russia joint
venture.
Reporters asked Zhantikin, if Russia might be a partner in the
construction.
"We have just mentioned that we are studying Russia's project now," he
said. "We have a Kazakhstan-Russia joint venture, and it is working on the
project of the plant."
Aktau /white mountain/ is a centre of the Mangystau Province in
western Kazakhstan. Between 1964 and 1991, the city was called Shevchenko
in honour of Ukraine's famous poet Taras Shevchenko.
