German scholar urges EU to back Iranian fuel swap deal

Berlin, May 19, IRNA -- A German scholar on the Middle East on Tuesday called on the European Union to show support for the latest deal on Iran's nuclear program.

Talking at a press briefing in Berlin, Margret Johannsen of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) said she wished that the EU would have also welcomed the nuclear accord.

Iran, Brazil and Turkey agreed on Monday to sign a fuel swap that would send low-enriched Iranian uranium to Ankara in exchange for enriched reactor fuel.

Johannsen stressed the need to give the new initiative a "chance."

Assessing the Tehran agreement, she termed the result "very positive."

The accord will make new sanctions against Iran even less likely, Johannsen added.

The expert pointed out that Iran which is already facing a massive arms build-up in the region, had to have also security guarantees by the West./end
