Iranian citizen returns home after 19 years in French prison

Tehran, May 19, IRNA – Ali Vakili Rad, an Iranian citizen who was in prison in France for 19 years, returned home on Wednesday morning.
French authorities had accused him, falsely, of being involved in the assassination of former Iranian Prime Minister Shahpour Bakhtiar in 1991.
Vakili Rad was welcomed at Imam Khomeini Airport by Deputy Foreign Minister in Iranian Expatriates Affairs Hassan Qashqavi, and member of parliament Kazem Jalali as well as his family.
Qashqavi expressed his pleasure with Vakili Rad’s release, adding that there is no connection between his release and the release of the French academic Clotilde Reiss who had flown to Paris on Sunday.
Reiss, who had been charged with espionage and sentenced to 10 years in prison, was allowed to leave Iran on Sunday after her sentence was commuted./end
