N-swap deal leaves no justification for US to pressure Iran

Islamabad, May 19, IRNA – Pakistani political and defence analyst Dr. Shireen M. Mazari on Tuesday said that Iran’s nuclear fuel swap deal leaves no justification for US to play politics over nuclear issue.

Talking to IRNA, she termed the deal as amazing adding that Iran has displayed an excellent model for other countries of the world.

Following the three-way talks between Iran, Turkey and Brazil, Tehran has announced a nuclear declaration whereby Tehran would send some 1,200 kg of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for a total of 120 kg of higher enriched uranium.

The declaration came as part of an earlier plan to supply fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor which produces medical isotopes for cancer patients.

Tehran, already under three sets of UN sanctions over its nuclear drive, touted the agreement as a goodwill gesture that paves the way for a resumption of talks with world powers.

Dr. Shireen M. Mazari said Iran is continuing its program under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and is fully cooperating with the IAEA in this regards.

Expressing her views, the analyst said that for the first time in the history, a non white player (Brazil) steps in to play for resolving the deadlock between Iran and west over nuclear issue. “It is an important factor.

She was of the view that the deal is a follow up of the meeting that held in Iran over the nuclear issue.

“You have seen what happened in the 60s, Iran is the only country which is resisting to the western pressure”, she said.

She believed that the deal reflects that how much Iran is serious in acquiring the civil nuclear technology.

Replying to a question over the reaction of the US on the deal, Shireen Mazari said that US is never satisfied with Iran and Pakistan irrespective of their compromises.

“The satisfaction of US is irrelevant for us, the question is that whether other countries of the world are satisfied with the deal and the answer is that they are satisfied”, she added.

Dr. Shireen M. Mazari was of the opinion that the idea of imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program is totally ridiculous. “It is purely political tool which has no legality”, she added.

Shireen M. Mazari is a scholar and commentator on Strategic Studies and Political Science from Pakistan. She was Director General of Institute of Strategic Studies, a research think-tank based in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Currently she is working as Editor of English newspaper daily ‘The Nation’./end
