EBRD BOARD OF GOVERNORS CONVENES IN ZAGREB
Baku, May 18 (AzerTAc). The 19th Annual Meeting of the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has been held in Zagreb, Croatia.
The meeting gave participants an opportunity to assess the latest political, economic and social changes and business opportunities in their countries and across the Bank`s region of operations.
The Bank`s shareholders made important decisions about the strategy of the EBRD for the coming years and how it can be best equipped to carry out its role. The Board of Governors` sessions were chaired by the EBRD Governor for France Christine Lagarde, who is also France`s Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment.
Azerbaijan`s minister of economic development Shahin Mustafayev led a large delegation for the event.
In his remarks at the meeting, Mustafayev highlighted Azerbaijan`s “all-round development”, which he described as “a product of successful socio-economic reforms under President Ilham Aliyev”.
“Due to the government`s purposeful measures, Azerbaijan has managed to minimize the impact of the global crisis on its economy. Azerbaijan`s Gross Domestic Product grew 9.3 percent in 2009.”
The minister said his country was keen to expand the relations with international financial institutions, including the EBRD.
He praised the EBRD`s participation in projects implemented in Azerbaijan, calling, however, the bank to be “more active” in supporting the country`s private sector.
The meeting also featured a presentation on the current state of the Azerbaijan`s economy, its cooperation with international financial institutions and business environment in the country.
On the sidelines of the event, the Azeri delegation met the EBRD`s top officials to discuss a variety of issues, including prospects for further developing the cooperation between the country and the bank.
