STATE HEAD MEETS IDEA'S REGIONAL DIRECTOR
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ President Ts.Elbegdorj received Tuesday Mr Andrew Ellis, a Director of the International Institute of Democracy and Election Assistance for Asia and Pacific Affairs.
At the meeting, the State Head and Mr Ellis exchanged views on the process of consolidation of democracy and election systems. Mr Elbegdorj introduced his recent initiative to enroll Mongolia in the membership of the Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
Mr Ellis said that the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), located in Stockholm of Sweden, decided to expand operations and activities in Asia and that it would be willing to cooperate with Mongolia in the cause of strengthening democracy and improving election legislation. The sides discussed issues of assessing Mongolia's democratic system and training national cadre in this sphere.
The IDEA, an inter-governmental organization, currently brings together 25 countries of Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Mr Ellis, the Director of IDEA for Asia and the Pacific, is one of the world's leading experts in electoral systems.
During his stay, Mr Ellis will meet with leaders of the General Election Commission (GEC), political parties and the parliamentary working groups who are drafting changes and amendments to Mongolia's election legislation.
