MOST POLITICAL PARTY LEADERS NOT KNOWN BY PUBLIC : POLL

Jakarta, July 11 (ANTARA) - A poll conducted by the National Survey Institute (LSN) recently has shown that most Indonesians have little knowledge about the leaders of the country's major political parties.

Most respondents in the poll do not know the chairpersons of major political parties dominating the House of Representatives (DPR), Umar S Bakry, LSN's executive director, said in a press release made available to ANTARA here Friday.

When the respondents were requested to mention the names of the leaders of 10 major political parties, most of them could not mention or did know the names.

But results of the survey also said 64.8 percent of the respondents could mention Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), while another 35.2 percent had no knowlege about her.

Megawati was former Indonesian president before the incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Umar said Jusuf Kalla, the Golkar Party l chairman was only known to 35.2 percent of the respondents.

"This is a surprising phenomenon," he said, adding that 64.8 percent of the respondents even did not know who the chairman of the Golkar Party was.

However, 98.2 percent of the respondents knew that Jusuf Kalla was Indonesian Vice President, he said.

In addition, 81.1 percent of the respondents did not know the 1 chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN). Only 18.9 percent of them said that Soetrisno Bachir is PAN's chairman.

On the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), only 9.2 percent of the respondents knew Tifatul Sembiring as the party's l chairman, despite the fact that the party's candidates won the direct gubernatorial elections in West Java and North Sumatra recently.

Regarding the newly established parties, the respondents only knew Wiranto as chairman of the People's Conscience Party (Hanura).

Most respondents said they did not know the chairpersons of other newly established political parties.

Bakry further said the survey on the people's knowledge about the chairpersons of the 10 major parties was held in the country's 33 provinces in June, 2008 with 1.225 respondents by applying the multistage random sampling.

Its margin of error was about 2.8 percent and the level of reliability 95 percent, he added.
