52 petrol stations in risk-prone areas already closed
BANGKOK, May 18 (TNA) - Fifty-two of a total of 107 petrol stations, 17 of 23 LPG stations, and all four NGV stations in areas at risk of attack or vandalism in the capital have been closed, according to Permanent Secretary for Energy, Pornchai Rujiprapa.
He said for safety reasons and to prevent possible sabotage, the ministry ordered suspension of gasoline deliveries in Bangkok's 13 risk areas. The first order was placed last Thursday (May 14),
followed by the second order on Friday, closing all 52 petrol stations and some natural gas stations.
Mr Pornchai admitted the action inconveniences motorists, who must drive further to fill their tanks in outer Bangkok, but he said fuel transport will resume soon once the political situation eases.
Meanwhile, he said the Ministry of Energy has ordered all of PTT's air foam fire trucks and those of other oil companies, from Bangkok City Hall and the Ministry of Interior to be prepared following
Monday's incident when Red Shirts parked a fuel truck with 6,000 litres of gasoline on Rama IV Road and attempted to set fire to it.
"I'm begging protesters to please not use petrol as a bargaining chip for political negotiations, as it will cause damage and trouble to innocent people," said Mr Pornchai.
He added the Energy Ministry has increased its security measures to prevent possible damage in all related energy-related agencies responsible for oil depots, power plants, dams, and oil refineries
by having local authorities to closely monitor those suspected of being likely to commit such crimes.(TNA)
