Thailand urgently needs new FM for ASEAN Summit: Noppadon

Bangkok, July 11 (TNA) - Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej needs to find a new foreign minister as soon as possible as the ASEAN Summit is approaching, according to Foreign Minister Noppadon PattamaOutgoing foreign minister Mr. Noppadon said Prime Minister Samak is pressed to name a new minister of foreign affairs in no time as Thailand needs a foreign minister to represent the country at the ASEAN Summit, to be held in Singapore on July 20.

As the role of foreign minister is still within the People Power Party (PPP) quota, Mr. Noppadon said. Much to be required is the possibility that the premier finds someone capable within the party itself first.

If no candidate within the PPP stands out as qualified to succeed him, Mr. Noppadon said, an outsider would then be welcomed, but on the condition that he or she possesses significant knowledge in foreign affairs and can start working right away, the outgoing foreign minister said.

Mr. Noppadon turned down the public expectation that he would continue to serve former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as his lawyer. Instead he said he would still remain a member of the PPP.
