Wounded ‘Seh Daeng’ dies in hospital Monday morning
BANGKOK, May 17 (TNA) -- Key anti-government Red Shirt movement ally Army Specialist Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known as ‘Seh Daeng', who was shot in the right temple last Thursday night died early Monday at state-run Vajira Hospital here, said the hospital director Dr Chaiwan Charoenchokethawee.
Dr Chaiwan told a press conference that Gen Khattiya passed away at 9.20am due to his already critical condition after being admitted to the hospital Thursday (May 13) night.
His blood pressure had fallen sharply along with slight edema while doctors treating him had put efforts to save his life, but they were unable to measure his blood pressure and his heart beat stopped Monday morning, said Dr Chaiwan.
The doctors had tried to treat the swelling of his brain with medications and kidney dialysis but his life slipped away.
Attending physicians who had treated him displayed X-ray films to the media and re-emphasised that Gen Khattiya died from a bullet shot from a high-velocity rifle. The lone bullet hit his right temple and exiting the left side of his head, shattering his skull.
Gen Khattiya, who was due to retire from army service at the compulsory retirement age of 60 at end of September 2011, was believed to have shot by a ‘professional sniper’ at a rally site on Sala Daeng intersection, a Bangkok prime business area, while he was being interviewed by foreign journalists.
His body will be taken from the hospital for Buddhist religious rites at a temple Monday evening.
Gen Khattiya was a key supporter of fugitive, ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He was a hardliner among the leading protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship who are demanding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to step down unconditionally.
