Blues storm home to defeat Port 118-92
Carlton's resurgence continued with a spirited come-from-behind 26-point triumph
over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
The Blues trailed by nine points at three quarter time but steamed home to win 17.16
(118) to 14.8 (92).
Carlton kicked six goals to Port's one in a sterling last quarter to record their
fifth win from eight games.
The Power was left with the same win-loss ratio after a gripping encounter before
30,228 spectators.
Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin kicked three goals for Carlton, as did ruckman Matthew
Kreuzer to cap his influential game.
Port's Steven Salopek booted three goals from his half-back flank, while teammates
Daniel Motlop and Cameron Hitchcock both kicked two.
Carlton's late surge was unheralded after a tight initial three quarters in which
neither side could establish an ascendancy.
The Blues were playing on a six-day break, compared with Port's seven days, but
sparked into action in a stunning final stanza.
With captain Chris Judd (27 disposals), Kade Simpson, Marc Murphy and Andrew
Carrazzo winning plenty of midfield ball, the Blues over-ran their opponents 6.6 to
1.1 in the final term.
Carlton also started the game strongly, taking the slight edge of a first quarter
when the teams alternated goals, the visitors 4.1 to Port 3.3.
The Power threatened to jump away in the second term when creating a 14-point buffer
before the Blues responded with four of the next six goals to trail by just one
point at halftime.
The visitors took the lead when Chris Yarran goaled in the second minute of the
third quarter before Port embarked on a streak of four consecutive goals to
establish a 17 point lead - the largest of the match thus far.
The Power's advantage was reduced to nine points at three quarter time, which
appeared significant enough in an even contest.
But Port faded in the face of Carlton's last term onslaught in which Kreuzer kicked
two of his goals to augment an impressive return of 19 disposal, eight marks and 15
hit outs.
