(Correction) PAD seeks impeachment of Samak Cabinet over breach of law in Preah Vihear case

BANGKOK, July 11 (TNA) - The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leaders Pipop Thongchai, Somsak Kosaisook and Suriyasai Katasila continued its assault on the Samak Sundaravej government Friday by meeting with Senate Speaker Prasobsuk Boondech to seek impeachment of the entire cabinet, saying they allegedly violated the law by allowing the signing of the Thai-Cambodian joint communiqué to list the Preah Vihear Temple as a World Heritage site.

Mr. Somsak claimed the government had deliberately broken Article 270 of the Constitution, by allowing Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama to sign the accord with Cambodia without first seeking parliamentary endorsement -- the case which the Constitution Court ruled unconstitutional last week.

He said it was not handled in a transparent manner and that it led toCambodia's success in placing the temple on the UNESCO World Heritage site register on Tuesday.

UNESCO, however, has stated clearly and officially that under international law the temple sits on Cambodian territory and thatThailand's fuss about the adjacent area simply has no relevance to the UN action. It said that Thai concerns could not play any role in the decision.

The Senate Speaker said he would proceed with the case once the PAD has acquired 20,000 signatures, within 180 days. Meanwhile, Mr. Suriyasai was confident he would be able to submit the list by July 14.

The heavy criticism over the role of Foreign Ministry as having contributed to Cambodia's success in listing the 11th century temple prompted Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama to resign on Thursday. Mr. Noppadon said he and the Foreign Ministry had done their best to protect Thai sovereignty, adding his resignation was to show hisgood intention for the country and to ease political tensions.
