Hall`s five goals help Dogs beat Swans
Five goals to Barry Hall have helped the Western Bulldogs to a 38-point victory over
Sydney in their AFL clash in Canberra on Saturday.
It was a dominant performance by the Bulldogs, who piled on 10 goals to just two in
the second and third quarters to set up the 14.17 (101) 9.9 (63) victory and consign
the Swans to their second comprehensive defeat in as many weeks.
Big forward Hall was instrumental in the win against his old club - his first
hit-out against them since being forced out last season for his fiery temper.
But Hall had little reason to get upset at Canberra's Manuka Oval, with his 5.4
return putting him among the best for the Dogs in front of a sell-out crowd of
14,308.
The Swans, already without their two best ruckmen, struggled following the loss of
forward Daniel Bradshaw, a late withdrawal with knee soreness.
It proved a critical loss for the Swans' forward line, with Jude Bolton and Adam
Goodes struggling to breach the deficit.
And the Swans wasted their opportunities when they had them, kicking just 9.9
despite finishing with the same number of inside 50m entries as their rivals.
After a tight battle in the first quarter, it was the Dogs who lifted a gear in the
second, stretching a shaky eight-point lead into a solid 29-point buffer at the main
break.
Hall wasn't alone in scoreboard contributions, with young gun Brennan Stack booting
three of his own.
The Dogs had the clear edge on Sydney's much-lauded midfield, with Daniel Cross and
Matthew Boyd sharing 61 touches between them.
While they failed to take advantage of the Swans' replacement rucking combination of
Mike Pyke and Jesse White, who did well, the Bulldogs had the wood on Sydney where
it counted.
Despite talk that Hall wouldn't be targeted by the Swans, the forward was on the
receiving end of more than his fair share of hard bumps courtesy of some of his
ex-premiership teammates.
He had more or less a fairytale start against them, kicking the first goal of the
game 75 seconds in thanks to an easy 50m penalty awarded against his opponent Lewis
Roberts-Thomson.
Goodes, who kicked four goals for the day including two in the last quarter to make
the final margin more respectable, was one of the best for the Swans.
