Iran’s urban activities expounded at UN

New York, UN, May 15, IRNA – Deputy Head of the Municipalities Organization expounded on Iran’s urban programs and activities in the 18th UN Sustainable Development Commission here on Friday.

On the sidelines of the commission meeting, Seyed Mehdi Moqadasi told IRNA that nine metropolises in Iran have approved projects of building underground railway networks and some are executing the projects.

He added that Iran pays special attention to transportation laws and intends to make 75 percent of intra-cities trips possible by public transportation in the next two years.

According to the program, 10 percent of intra-city trips happen by underground railway networks, 40 percent by bus and 25 percent by taxi, he said.

Concerning waste recycling as an important issue in the meeting, Moqadasi said that currently 20 percent of city waste is recycled, 25 percent is separated and a study is also being performed to recycle all waste.

In cities like Shiraz and Mashad, from the beginning of the year 2010, electricity is being produced by bio-gas method and there is a plan to produce electricity from waste.

Referring to the large volume of rubble in the suburbs of the metropolis, the official said that there are projects to use the rubble to produce materials for asphalt and foundation works for roads./end
