INDUSTRY MINISTER OFFICIALLY OPENS MOTOR SHOW 2008

Jakarta, July 11 (ANTARA) - Industry Minister Fahmi Indris officially opened an Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS) 2008 at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) here on Friday.

The 16th IIMS is being staged by the Indonesian Association of Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) from July 11 to 20, 2008, and participated in by 18 sole agents of brand holders and 121 other agents.

The exhibition was initially scheduled to be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Vice Chairman of Gaikindo Johnny Darmawan, in his capacity as head of the IMMS organizing committee, said the national automotive industry was one of Indonesia's main economic engines.

"Automotive sales in 2007 reached 433,000 units in 2007, an increase of 30 percent from 2006. In 2008, sales are projected to total 500,000 units with due account being taken of the recent oil price hikes," he said.

The show, themed "Advanced Motoring, Hi-Quality Living", is introducing environmentally friendly vehicles which use hybrid energy, gas and biofuel.

Meanwhile, Gaikindo Chairman Bamgang Trisulo said automotive product sales in the first semester of 2008 aggregated 290,000 units of which 50,000 were exported. He expressed optimism that this year's sales could hit 520,000 units with 100,000 units exported.

Also present at the IMMS opening ceremony were Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar and Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Jamal.

In June 2008 alone, domestic car sales reached 54,631 units, up 7.7 percent from a month earlier. Compared to the same period last year, domestic car sales in June 2008 rose 38.6 percent.

Meanwhile, domestic motorcycle sales in the first half of 2008 grew 44 percent to 3,060,400 units from a year earlier, an industry executive said. The first-semester motorcycle sales figure represented more than 50 percent of the target of 5.2 million units for 2008.
