Govt 'not involved' in Seh Daeng shooting

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) – Thailand’s Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) on Friday denied that either CRES or the government were behind the attempted murder of Red Shirt leader Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol Thursday night.

CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd made the denial following rumours that the action was an army plot to kill Gen Khattiya also known as 'Seh Daeng', a hardline Red Shirt leader who supervises the movement’s security operation and Red Shirt guards.

Seh Daeng was shot in the head while he was being interviewed by foreign media outside the Red Shirt barricades at Sala Daeng intersection Thursday evening. He was seriously injured and is now hospitalised at Vajira Hospital.

Col Sansern said an investigation will be carried out on the matter. Some people are trying to stir up violence during this period and army personnel have also been victims by smilar attacks at Khok Wua intersection on Ratchadamnoen Avenue and at Vibhavadi Road near Don Mueang.

Scores of soldiers were killed in gunfire and grenade attacks at Khok Wua intersection April 10 and one was shot dead at his head during the security operation to intersect Red Shirt caravan at Vibhavai Road end of April.

“The security forces are trying to exert more pressure (on the protesters) without using force and we have no policy to cause violence,” said the CRES spokesman.

Regarding the recent statement by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva pointing out that Gen Khattiya was involved in violent attacks, Col Sansern said the premier's statement only reflected what had happened as Gen Khattiya is seen as supervising the Reds' security
operation.'

"Let justice runs its course," said Col Sansern. "CRES and the government are ready to enter the process."

The CRES spokesman reiterated the problem will end when the Red Shirts end their protest and their leaders surrender to police.

Col Sansern added soldiers armed with M16 assault rifles have taken position at key locations to prevent possible attacks on security personnel.

Following confrontations between security forces and Red Shirt protesters in the sealed area, Col Sansern said the army chief has instructed every army unit to exercise the utmost restraint and avoid violence at all cost without threatening the public.

Any use of live ammunition will be only according to regulations and the appropriate chain of command.

The CRES spokesman also said the military will not let the protesters set up their own checkpoints around the sealed zone and that dispersing the crowd may be necessary.

We also need to remove our security personnel from Lumpini Park and we will disperse the protesters if they obstruct our operation, said Col Sansern. (TNA)
